The International Film School Wales at University of Wales, Newport is offering two merit-based scholarships for applicants from the USA for entry in 2009/10.

MA/MFA Animation at the International Film School Wales

Animation at Masters level at Newport builds on our international reputation for producing creative professionals who are able to meet the demands of this diverse industry.

Applicants for this scholarship should be well-organized, imaginative individuals who can demonstrate a passion and drive for the medium of animation. You will need to be prepared to take risks and stretch yourself beyond your 'comfort zone'.

Animation students are offered their own studio space and have full access to a 15 seat MAYA training room which also houses other essential software (Flash, Toonboom, After Effects, etc). We run a large production facility which contains linetesters, sound room, Fusion and Cel Action suites and other post-production facilities. We provide support for study in 2D, 3D Stop Motion and CG animation.

Conditions of entry:

  1. A portfolio of relevant previous experience in film production and allied crafts – design, media practices, performance, creative writing.
  2. Original script and storyboard for a three minute animated film.

MA/MFA Film at the International Film School Wales

Film at Masters level at Newport focuses on the writer/director while offering higher-level skills in cinematography and postproduction. Modules in screenwriting for short films, directing actors and film drama are supplemented by workshops in scheduling, budgeting, art direction, location management and assistant directing. Students produce a 10-15 minute graduation film in collaboration with fellow students and/or professional crew.

Facilities include Super 16mm film and DVCPRO HD, Avid Adrenalin, Pro Tools sound mixing, and studios with lighting rigs, dollies and tracks.

The MFA element is based on internships and placements, supported by the Skillset Screen Academy Wales. MA students are supported by professional mentoring based in the thriving film and broadcast industries in Cardiff and London.

Conditions of entry:

  1. A 5 minute film drama produced specifically for this competition, submitted on DVD or via the registration/upload page.

Award details
  1. The awards are tuition fee scholarships (MA fees of £8750 or circa.12,500 US$). Scholarship award holders will be responsible for their travel, insurance and living expenses.
  2. Students completing the MA will study for a duration of 12-18 months and those completing the MFA will do so in 18 -24 months.

Once you have completed and returned your application, upload your portfolio, original script and storyboard (MA/MFA Animation, please Zip your files*) or 5 minute film (MA/MFA Film) online or submit on DVD to the address above. Alternatively for MA/MFA Film you can upload your film to YouTube and send us the link. We will display the films on our channel at http://www.youtube.com/ifswscholar.
